Three Short Poems

"The underground roads
Are, as the dead prefer them,
Always tortuous."

"When he looked the cave in the eye,
Hercules
Had a moment of doubt."

"Leaning out over
The dreadful precipice,
One contemptuous tree."

Three Short Poems
W.H. Auden
